At Blue Lagoon Organics we are reclaiming land for the next generation.
We are growing certified organic fruit, herbs and vegetables. We work
hand in hand with nature to protect our water resources, to minimize
soil degradation, to decrease pollution, to optimize biological activity
within the soil, and to build healthy soil that will produce wholesome food.
We have shaped the farm into raised berms for better drainage and 3 dugouts
to collect water. We minimize the use of this water by pumping it through
drip irrigation tape.
To replace nutrients in the soil we grow green manure such as alfalfa. This
breaks up the hardpan, fixes nitrogen in the soil and is a nutritious mulch.
We mulch around the plants with alfalfa hay. This suppresses the weeds and
adds organic matter and nitrogen as it decomposes. In the fall it is tilled
in to feed the microbial life of the soil.
For additional fertility we raise pastured poultry. We run a chicken tractor over
a berm. The chickens eat the weeds, rototill and scratch the soil as they
move and fertilize constantly. It is a win-win situation. They give us
egg-stra benefits.
